PLANNED GIVING
Since its incorporation in 1980, the Family Refuge Center has worked toward violence-free lives in our community. Shelter, advocacy, counseling, adult and children's education, support groups, community education and continuing support are the means to work toward healthy family life. Through our work, we have gathered many staunch supporters. Many have volunteered on our board of directors, through our advisory council, at the office and shelter. Each year donations from individuals in the community have helped to meet our budget. Now the Family Refuge Center is starting an endowment fund in an effort to expand the base of funding for our work.
An endowment fund is an income-generating mechanism that involves setting aside money to create interest. The principal is invested and the dividends, gains, and interest income are used. This fund allows donors to contribute to us through bequests in their will, gifts, and life insurance policies. There are advantages to planned giving for donors. A bequest can be deducted from the estate of the donor and can lower the amount of estate tax that will be owed. Most important, it allows a donor to have an ongoing impact in the community and help the Family Refuge Center in the future.
The Family Refuge Center has opened an endowment account with the Domini Social Equity Fund. This is a socially responsible investment. Only the interest from this will be used to assist with operating costs.
In the United States bequests account for 5% of all the money given to charitable causes. It is equal to the amount given by foundations and greater than the amount given by corporations. While many people believe bequests are only for the wealthy, anyone can make a bequest as part of their will. The major reason to contribute to the endowment fund is continuing to support the work of the Family Refuge Center.
